Women's Golf Outfits with SPF: What to Buy and Where (2026)
UPF 50+ golf clothing for women — what to look for in sun-protective fabric, the brands that actually deliver, and the outfits we recommend for full coverage.
Eighteen holes is roughly four to five hours in direct sun. Sunscreen helps, but it sweats off, gets wiped on shots, and almost never reaches your back of neck or the strip between sleeve and glove. The reliable fix is the clothing itself — UPF-rated fabric blocks UV at the source.
Here’s how to build a sun-protected golf wardrobe that doesn’t look like a hospital gown.
Quick answer: where to find women’s golf outfits with SPF
- Coolibar — UPF 50+ across the entire line, including skorts, tops, and dresses cut for golf
- Athleta golf line — UPF 50+ on tops and bottoms, athleisure feel
- Lululemon’s golf collection — UPF 50+ on most pieces, modern fit
- Foray Golf — UPF 50+ on tops, bold colors and prints
- Title Nine — solid UPF range, more outdoorsy aesthetic
- REI Co-op brand — UPF performance staples at lower price
Most modern golf brands publish UPF ratings on each product page. If it’s not listed, assume it’s not rated.

What “UPF” means and what number to buy
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is to fabric what SPF is to sunscreen. The scale:
- UPF 15-24: “Good” protection. Blocks ~93-95% of UV.
- UPF 25-39: “Very good.” Blocks ~96-97%.
- UPF 50+: “Excellent.” Blocks 98%+. Buy this.
UPF is built into the fabric — by weave density, fiber type, and finishing treatments. Unlike sunscreen, it doesn’t wear off. A UPF 50+ shirt at purchase is UPF 50+ years later, assuming it isn’t shredded.
What to look for in a UPF golf outfit
Coverage geometry. A UPF 50+ tank does nothing for your shoulders. Prioritize:
- Long-sleeve performance tops (the single best buy)
- Quarter-zip pullovers with thumb loops (protect the back of the hand)
- Skorts with built-in shorts in UPF fabric (most are)
- High-neck or mock-neck collars (chest and collarbone get hit hardest)
Fabric weight. Heavier weave = higher UPF and hotter. The trick is moisture-wicking UPF fabric — feels like a tee, performs like a parasol. Look for “moisture wicking” + “UPF 50+” both listed.
Color matters less than fabric. Dark colors block slightly more UV than light, but a UPF 50+ white shirt outperforms a non-rated black one. Don’t sacrifice the look you want.
A full UPF 50+ outfit (sample build)
- Top: Coolibar or Athleta long-sleeve performance crew, UPF 50+
- Bottom: Lululemon Pleated Tennis Skirt 15” (UPF 50+, built-in shorts)
- Layer: Quarter-zip with thumb loops for cool mornings or extra arm coverage
- Hat: Wide-brim sun visor or full bucket, UPF 50+
- Sleeves: Optional UPF arm sleeves slide on for the back nine if the temperature drops
Total cost: $180-300 depending on brand mix. One outfit lasts years.
What about the chest and chin?
The neck, upper chest, and underside of the chin get more sun than people realize — bouncing UV off the grass, sand, and water. Two fixes:
- Mock-neck tops instead of low V-necks
- Wide-brim hat instead of visor (visor leaves your face fully exposed)
Mistakes we see
- Buying one UPF top and assuming you’re covered. The skort fabric needs to be rated too.
- Trusting “sun protective” marketing without a published UPF number. If a brand doesn’t state UPF on the spec sheet, the fabric isn’t rated.
- Wearing thin cotton tees and trusting sunscreen. Wet cotton drops to UPF 3-5. Useless.
Common questions
Does UPF wash out? Standard UPF doesn’t. Treatment-based UPF (some cheaper brands) can degrade after 30-50 washes. Stick with brands that get UPF from the weave, not a coating.
Is UPF 50+ overkill? No. UPF 50 blocks 98%+ UV. UPF 30 blocks ~96%. Over four hours of direct sun, that 2% gap matters.
Do I still need sunscreen? Yes — for face, hands, neck back, anywhere fabric doesn’t cover.
Is UPF clothing hot? Some is. Modern technical UPF fabric is engineered to be lighter and cooler than a standard cotton tee. Buy from brands with explicit UPF + moisture-wicking ratings, not just one or the other.
